Foil Art: Encourage Creativity on a New Medium

This is a quick and simple art that requires only a few items from the house. Foil art is a good way to encourage creativity and change your art medium. It’s easy for little kids (as long as the adults use the glue gun) and big kids alike.

First…

Draw your picture onto your cardboard. This step in not completely necessary, but I find it easier. I like the fact that I can trace the pencil lines with my hot glue instead of trying to free draw with the glue gun. This way if I make a mistake, I can fix it. If you don’t want to freehand your picture you can use a coloring sheet taped onto the cardboard and trace it.

Outline your art with hot glue. I found that you want less detail for this step. For this reason, I left off a few of the details when I did my outlines. The simpler the art the better. That is what makes this type of art good for smaller kids.

Cover your art in foil

Once the glue has set, then tear off a piece of foil large enough to cover your picture. Wrap the foil around the cardboard where it is tight but not to the point of tearing. I started wrapping on the long edge and then just made my way around the cardboard.

Rub your foil

After the foil is wrapped around the cardboard, use your fingers or the eraser end of the pencil to gently rub it to make the glue lines stand out.

Add color to your foil art

Now you get to decorate your foil art however you would like. Use the markers to gently color inside the glue line. If you press down too hard the foil will tear. That’s ok, just use less pressure. Color as little or as much as you want to get the look you are going for.

NOTE: If you are not using sharpie markers you may want to test to see if your marker rubs off of the foil.

Once complete hang your art somewhere to be admired for a bit. Or take your cardboard, flip it over, and start again. Enjoy getting to color and draw on a different medium. See if you like certain colors more than others, or use the foil as part of your design.
