Frosting Playdough: A “Sweet” Tool Motor Skills

Here we are, on Day 3 of homeschooling our son and coming up with something fun to do while we are social distancing. We are feeling very blessed that this hasn’t impacted our family as much as many others, but we are definitely feeling the isolation. Did our lifestyles change…YES! Is it hard to stay home…YES! Is it even harder to tell your kids they can’t be with their friend on his birthday today…VERY MUCH YES!!! This whole ordeal has had me feeling so many different emotions. So, today as I was rummaging through our panty, with birthday on the brain, and I found a container of store bought icing that needed to be used before it expired. I looked around for a cake, but couldn’t find one. So, I decided to do the next best thing….make frosting playdough!

This playdough is a quick and fun recipe. It’s edible and a “SWEET” tool for fine motor skills! All you need to make this is:

2 ingredients for edible frosting playdough
  • powdered sugar, also called icing sugar in some places
  • tub of frosting (you could make homemade buttercream but that’s too much for me in this craft)

First you need to measure out 2 ¾ cup of powdered sugar into a bowl. Then add in 1 cup of icing. As an added bonus there will be about 2 Tbsp. of frosting left for you to eat out of the canister. I won’t tell if you put it aside for yourself later 🙂

Next you will mix these two ingredients until they combine to form a smooth dough consistency. This takes a few minutes. I found it was easier to dump my ingredients onto the table and knead them like bread, being sure to press the dough into the loose powdered sugar.

That’s it!! You now have frosting playdough.

If you want to color your playdough now you can add food coloring and blend it in, or you can just leave it white. Pull out a few playdough toys and start playing.
