Personalized Apron for Kids from Dollar Tree Aprons

Like the rest of you, this Corona virus has caused us to have to change our plans. One of our biggest changes is having to cancel our daughters birthday party. If you know me, you know that I LOVE parties! I enjoy celebrating my children and usually go all out to do so. This year, however, I have put a lot of time into some fun party decor and favors and for now it will just sit in my craft room until all of this is over and we can decide if we will have a late birthday party or try again next year! This year our theme was an Art party. Aprons were on my list for party favors and fortunately for me, I found some cute kids aprons at the Dollar Tree! I knew that I wanted to make personalized aprons for kids for the party, but I wasn’t sure that the fabric would hold up to the heat. So, I decided to try my hand at personalizing them with iron-on vinyl and a little patience, and to my surprise…..IT WORKED!!!! A personalized apron for kids from a Dollar Tree Apron!

If you want a really cute, cheap, personalized apron here’s what you’re going to need:

NOTE: You don’t have to use white iron-on vinyl. I have composed a list of different types of HTV in this post here. Take a look you might find something else that you like.

First…

Take your apron and open it. You will need to iron out the wrinkles so that when you personalize it the vinyl will stick. These aprons are not resistant to high heat at all!!! So, make sure you use the silk/synthetic setting. When you are done with the iron you will leave it on because you will be using it in a few minutes.

Next…

Open your cutting machines software and design your name. For these aprons, I found that about 7 inches wide is the perfect width for the center chest area. If you don’t have a cutting machine, draw your name onto the clear plastic side of the HTV. Then cut it out and weed it (take off the excess vinyl around and between the letters).

Now…

Here comes the part where you need patience, take your cut out vinyl and place it on your pressed apron. Lay a towel on top of the vinyl and then place the iron on top. Let the iron sit there for at least 15 seconds. Then you will slowly move the iron around the design while applying pressure. This takes much longer than it would if you were working with vinyl on a heat resistant fabric. You will continue to move the iron around for about 5 minutes.

Set the iron to the side and very slowly peel the clear backing from the vinyl. If any vinyl didn’t stick, run the iron over it again. Once the backing is completely peeled away, lay the towel onto the apron once more and iron the vinyl for another minute or so.

That’s it! You’re DONE!!! You have created a beautiful personalized kids apron from a Dollar Tree apron. My kids LOVE their aprons and I hope yours do too.
