This past December I was looking for gift ideas, and I ran across a cute wood decoration. This little decoration looked as if it had been designed using a wood burning tool, but after reading closely, I found that it had used a Scorch marker. If you are anything like me, I had never heard of a Scorch Marker before, so I looked it up. Basically this marker creates a chemical reaction with the wood when heat is added. This looked like a fun, easy less dangerous way for the kids to get to enjoy a type of wood burning activity. Wood burning with the scorch marker was a breeze.
Supplies:
- scorch marker
- wood
- heat gun (I used my craft one for embossing, but here’s an actual heat gun)
I had some leftover wood tiles from making a good friend of mine a scrabble wall for her birthday. So, I decided since this was our first time experimenting with the marker that I would just use a small canvas for our designs. You can choose different wood pieces or use what you may have around the house.

First draw your design..
These markers work like paint pens. You have to push down on the tip until the liquid coats the tip, and then draw or write whatever you want. You’ll be able to see a slight difference in the coloring once you write on the wood. I drew the letter so you can see it.

Next, apply heat…
After you draw on the wood, you will use your heat gun to apply heat. This takes a few minutes to really get burning. Just be patient. Also, the air that reflects off the wood is HOT so this part will need to be done by an adult!

AND don’t get too close to the wood!!!
